The first gathering of Alaska parents of children with Down syndrome was held April 16. 1985 in Anchorage. Alaska. The meeting was called to order by Mary Carr of the Infant Learning Program. Potluck meetings began in June and were held at the Association for Retarded Citizens of Anchorage (ARCA) and Chugiak Children Services (CCS). There were around 15 to 20 families attending, along with several professionals. The groups goals at these meetings included education and support, community awareness. dissemination of information, newborn information packets for hospitals to give to new parents, statewide networking and a newsletter.
