The Ann Whitehill Down Syndrome Program brings together specialists from many areas to address the medical and psychosocial needs of children with Down syndrome. A developmental pediatrician, pediatric nurse practitioner, pediatric social worker, pediatric occupational therapist, physical therapist and certified speech pathologist work closely with the primary care physician to help each child achieve his or her optimal potential. We also refer the family to local resources for therapy and developmental programs.

Down syndrome
Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring genetic condition. One in every 800 to 1,000 live births is a child with Down syndrome. Children with Down syndrome are born to parents of all ages.

There is wide variability in the mental abilities, behavior and physical development of persons with Down syndrome. Well informed and supportive families, therapists, school and community personnel help people with Down syndrome achieve their best developmental potential.

Children with Down syndrome may have special medical problems.

The Ann Whitehill Down Syndrome Program at the Riley Hospital for Children provides specialized care for children with Down syndrome. We provide advice and support for families while ensuring each child has the best care available to grow and develop to his or her full potential.

When your child is seen in our Down syndrome program a coordinated multidisciplinary evaluation will take place. Your child will be seen by a board certified pediatrician, who specializes in children with special developmental needs. A nurse practitioner, dietitian, speech therapist, and social worker are also part of the team. Other pediatric subspecialists available for consultation are cardiology, ENT, endocrinology, dental, ophthalmology, audiology, orthopedics, pulmonary, occupational therapy, physical therapy, psychology and psychiatry. A report of the visit will be sent to your child's primary care physician.

Educate people about the strengths and abilities of individuals with Down syndrome
Summer Camp
During the summer, a one week camping experience is conducted at Bradford Woods in Southern Indiana. The camp is for children between the ages of 8 and 22 years with Down syndrome. The camp offers swimming, hiking, fishing and crafts.
